Optimizing PC200-8 Performance with a Combination of EMMS and KOMTRAX

The hydraulic excavator PC200-7 was introduced to the market in 2001 and command a good reputation ever since. Recently, demands for reduced environment load are increasing and in the next-phase, regulations on exhausted gas will be enforced sequentially in Japan, United States and Europe. Within European Union, Stage 2 of noise regulations has been started in 2006, focusing on “environment,” “safety” and “information technology (IT)”.
Unique and unrivaled, PC200-8 equipment has been developed and marketed with reference to various regulations and featuring many selling points. Highlighting “Environment, Safety and IT” as development concepts, the development objectives of PC200-8 are to conform with environmental regulations, to pursue reduced environmental load, safety and comfort, to enhance IT utilization and maintenance ability, and to upgrade the marketability, in order to produce hydraulic excavators appropriate to user needs.
One of the features in the IT development of PC200-8 is the usage of LCD Color Monitor. With 7 inches LCD and high resolution screen TFT (Thin Film Transistor), operator can view the PC200-8 status easily. A simple menu button helps the operator to easliy find information needed among the complete various functions.
A sign to indicate status of the fuel consumption is displayed on the right side of multi-monitor screen. A sign color will changed from green to orange to alert the operator when status is changed to high load. In addition, if idle mode continues longer than a predetermined duration then a message will be displayed on the monitor, as a reminder to the operator. This feature is very useful for maintaining work efficiency and saving fuel consumption of PC200-8.
EMMS (Equipment Management Monitoring System)
Emms (Equipment Management Monitoring System) is one of the leading features that have been applied in PC200-8 monitor panel. There are four main functions of the EMMS :

Abnormality display & real-time data display
[Abnormality display function]
LCD monitor displays the engine oil level or coolant level abnormality etc. when it occurs.
[Real-time data display]
LCD monitor displays hydraulic pressure and engine speed data etc. to assist troubleshooting for minimum down time.

Maintenance function
LCD monitor informs replacement time of oil and filters when replacement interval is reached.

Maintenance history memory function
Monitor stores maintenance records of oil and filters replacement etc.

Trouble data memory function
Monitor stores abnormalities for effective troubleshooting.
The linkage of the multifunction monitor panel with KOMTRAX has made it possible to promptly grasp the content of monitoring machine conditions implemented by EMMS, as illustrated below:
Information that can be refered to KOMTRAX
For try out of this feature, UT has collaborated with one of its customers, PT Nyalindung, to monitor one unit of PC200-8 working at grit mining, Padalarang, Bandung, using EMMS and KOMTRAX. From data collected by UT Engineering team on Wednesday, January 13th, 2010, maintenance list of this unit of PC200-8 S/N: 316124 in SMR: 749 H can be viewed below :
As shown in picture above, there are maintenance information for complete oil change and filters in accordance to replacement intervals and remaining hours. Red mark and number -2h on the Engine oil Change indicates that oil change should be done 2 hours earlier. In comparison, following is the KOMTRAX reports on the same date, January 13th, 2010 :
Two above two ilustration, shown a rather similar data. The difference is that data shown by KOMTRAX recorded that at SMR: 750 H oil changes shoul be done at minus 3.0H.
The unit capability to integrate remote monitoring using EMMS and KOMTRAX enables an optimum level of maintenance management of heavy equipment, resulting in better maintenance and high availability of the equipment.
