Jakarta, April 3,2024 – PT United Tractors Tbk (UT) and PT Traktor Nusantara (TN) are collaborating with Universitas Gadjah Mada’s Vocational School to conduct research in developing environmentally friendly electric tractor technology, known as the Electric Tractor for Agriculture (ETA). This collaboration is part of the green economy initiative to achieve sustainable breakthroughs in the agricultural sector. The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemendikbudristek RI) supports the initiative through the Kedaireka (Matching Fund) scheme.

The research took place from May to December 2023. The project’s theme is “Development of Electric Tractors as Implementing Green Technology to Support Sustainable Agriculture.” This project aims to reduce carbon footprint while increasing operational efficiency in the agricultural sector.

“This collaboration marks a milestone for UT and TN in realizing sustainable agriculture in Indonesia through environmentally friendly electric tractor technology. We believe that by combining the technical expertise of Universitas Gadjah Mada’s Vocational School and the industry experience of UT and TN, we can create innovative solutions for farmers and the environment. The electric tractor developed in this project is expected to reduce carbon footprint, decrease exhaust emissions, and enhance operational efficiency in agriculture,” said UT’s CSR Manager, Himawan Sutanto.

The development method of the electric tractor resulting from this collaboration is systematically designed to achieve efficiency, safety, and comfort. Unique technology has been developed and implemented to protect electrical components from water and mud. The ergonomic design of this tractor has been tailored to provide comfort for farmers who typically use diesel-powered tractors. The product has also been registered as Intellectual Property Rights (IPR).

Additionally, this tractor uses LifePO4 batteries for energy storage. These batteries were chosen for their compactness and lightness compared to conventional lead-acid batteries and their ability to withstand various power discharge cycles. The prototype can generate a maximum power 10HP, equivalent to traditional diesel-powered tractors. Unlike conventional tractors that require a crank to start, the research-derived tractor is equipped with an electric starter. Furthermore, the tractor has a power shift system to facilitate farmers’ operations.

With a shared commitment to innovation and sustainability, it is hoped that the electric tractor resulting from this collaboration will have a positive impact on strengthening Indonesia’s agricultural sector and achieving a greener and more sustainable future.
