The PAMA MTBU Solar Power Plant project in Muara Enim, South Sumatra.

PT Energia Prima Nusantara (EPN), a subsidiary of PT United Tractors Tbk, is committed to contributing to the development of the environmental energy sector, particularly in the Solar Power Plants (PLTS) field. As part of this commitment, EPN has constructed an Off-Grid Solar Power Plant through PT Pamapersada Nusantara (PAMA) project at the PAMA MTBU operational site in South Sumatra. To promote a clean energy mix in the coal mining operational area, this project was officially inaugurated on February 16, 2024.

“Focusing on sustainability principles, we are committed to inviting stakeholders in the mining industry to implement clean energy, considering environmental, economic, social, and good governance aspects. The installation of solar panel technology is a tangible manifestation of our competence and dedication to contributing to a better future by decarbonizing coal mining operations,” stated EPN Director Eko Harry Ariadin.

EPN and PAMA collaborated on a project to establish a Solar Power Plant with a total capacity of 615.6 kWp. The plant uses a 200 kWh battery and is Indonesia’s first Smart Micro Grid. The PAMA MTBU PLTS concept incorporates batteries, and the microgrid has a Photovoltaic (PV) to Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) ratio of 2:1. This system can increase the proportion of renewable energy by 30% through the same BESS configuration.

Furthermore, this feature can handle external disruptions, prevent power outage losses of up to $0.5 million per 10MW, and avoid Smart String-level disconnections, thus improving the safety of the PV system by four times. Installing the Off-Grid PLTS at the PAMA MTBU site can reduce carbon emissions in the coal mining area by 423 thousand tons of CO2 per year, equivalent to planting 19,000 trees annually.

The collaboration project between EPN and PAMA is part of the Company’s efforts to prioritize sustainability principles by implementing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices, particularly in the coal mining operational area. The inauguration of PAMA MTBU was attended by the President Director of PT Pamapersada Nusantara (PAMA), Hendra Hutahean; CSR & General Services Division Head of PAMA, TH Puguh Sasetyo; Corporate Information System Division Head of PAMA, Joseph Lembayung; and EPN Director of Operation & Engineering, Eko Harry Ariadin.

Through this initiative, EPN and PAMA hope to enhance positive synergy and collaboration towards reducing carbon emissions in the coal mining operational area while maintaining harmonious relationships with the environment for a better future for Indonesia.

PT Energia Prima Nusantara’ Overview:

Established on February 28, 2014, the company supplied integrated electrical energy to the coal sector and supporting infrastructure. It owned and operated the PAMA-1 open-pit mine power plant with a capacity of 2脳15 MW in Kapuas Regency, Central Kalimantan. In 2018, the company shifted its focus to the Renewable Energy sector, providing systematic rooftop solar power, Mini Hydro Power Plants (PLTMH), transmission distribution network development, and Solar PV Mobile research and development for application in light vehicles, among other renewable energy projects.

ESG of PT Energia Prima Nusantara:

As a company operating in the electricity sector in Indonesia, EPN acknowledges the vital role of environmental aspects in the energy business journey and is committed to providing environmentally friendly electricity. In supporting ESG programs in the coal-fired power business, EPN strategically takes steps to accelerate the implementation of Co-Firing Biomass by producing and incorporating a 3% woodchip and sawdust blend from the total fuel consumption (coal) used.

This is an effort to reduce carbon in the PLTU surroundings. Waste management, both hazardous and non-hazardous, follows the 3R principle: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. One significant waste management effort involves utilizing Fly Ash and Bottom Ash to create economically valuable products such as concrete and paving blocks. Additionally, EPN is advancing its other business streams with the massive development of installing ASTRA Group Solar Power Plants, having a pipeline of 89 MWp by 2025. It also operates PLTMH Cikopo in Garut with a capacity of 7.4 MW, PLTMH Tomasa in Central Sulawesi with a capacity of 10 MW, and PLTMH Yaentu in Central Sulawesi with a capacity of 10 MW. PT Arkora Hydro Tbk is constructing the 5.4 MW PLTMH Kukusan in Lampung, targeting completion in 2024. Through its subsidiary PT Bina Pertiwi Energi, the EPN group is also building the 7 MW PLTMH Besai Kemu in Lampung.
